Flemington next stop for Weir-trained Star

Saturday 18 October 2014, 2:14pm

After success at the Caulfield carnival, connections of Stratum Star now have their eyes set firmly on Melbourne Cup week at Flemington.

The Darren Weir-trained Stratum Star made it three wins from his last four starts when victorious in the Crown Lager Stakes (1400m) on Saturday.

Ridden by Brad Rawiller, Stratum Star ($7.50) scored a half-neck victory over Manhattan Avenue ($9.50) with the favourite Careless ($6) three quarters of a length away third.

With Weir stuck in traffic, managing part-owner David Davidson said the Group Three Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on November 1 was the next target.

Stratum Star began his career with Rick Hore-Lacy at Caulfield but when he retired from training and scaled back his ownership of horses, Davidson and other members of the syndicate group bought out his shares.

Davidson had "two or three horses" with Hore-Lacy including Clever Dude but hasn't looked back since joining Weir's stable at Ballarat.

Stratum Star has had five starts for Weir, registering three wins, the last two in black-type races in city grade.

Rawiller said Stratum Star would continue to improve and can't wait for the colt to step up in journey.

"He's kept stepping up," Rawiller said.

"I loved the way he travelled today. He got to the front too soon after being a fair way back but he hung tough.

"I can't wait for him to get to a mile-and-a-quarter."
