Godolphin revival continues with Malice

Saturday 20 September 2014, 1:25pm

Wet tracks have frustrated Godolphin's start to the racing season but with the weather finally turning, so has their luck.

Three days after promising colt Sweynesse took out the Group Three Spring Stakes at the Newcastle Cup carnival, Malice gave Sheikh Mohammed's operation its third Sydney win this season when he came from midfield in Saturday's Bacardi Untameable Handicap (1600m) at Randwick.

Like many of his John O'Shea-trained stablemates, Malice ($6) struggled on a heavy track first-up last month and appreciated a firmer surface to hold off the late finish of odds-on favourite Black Revolver by a short neck.

"It's only a start but I'm happy with the way the horses are going at home," O'Shea said.

"Hopefully now they're getting on top of the ground we can start to get some results."

Malice was Group placed over 2000m during the Sydney autumn carnival and O'Shea will look to step him up to that distance.

Winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy said the four-year-old had returned a stronger horse and won comfortably despite the slender margin.

"He improved into the race and was full of running once I pressed the button at the 300 metres," McEvoy said.

"I'm sure there are options for him here and down in Melbourne."
