Race to be named in Guy Walter's honour

Saturday 30 August 2014, 1:35pm

The Group Three Wiggle Stakes will be renamed in honour of trainer Guy Walter who died suddenly in May.

The race for mares is held on Chipping Norton Stakes day, the showpiece meeting at Walter's Warwick Farm home, in autumn.

The Australian Turf Club has applied to the Australian Pattern Committee to rubber stamp the Guy Walter Stakes as the new name.

The ATC decided on the race in consultation with Walter's wife Wendy who has also been presented with associate membership of the club.

Apart from his champion Tie The Knot, the winner of four successive Chipping Norton Stakes, Walter was known for his prowess with fillies and mares.

His Group One winners include Spinning Hill, Wild Iris and Republic Lass and more recently Streama and Appearance.

Danni Martine won the 2005 Wiggle on her way to running third behind stablemates Patezza and Court's In Session in Walter's famous Doncaster trifecta.

ATC chief executive Darren Pearce said the club wanted to acknowledge one of Sydney's greatest trainers on a day close to the late trainer's heart.

On Friday, Pearce presented Wendy Walter with her associate membership at a private function for Warwick Farm trainers and staff.

"Guy was not only an incredibly skilled horseman, but an ornament to Sydney racing and was recognised by all as a true gentleman of the turf," Pearce said.

"A part of Warwick Farm's history will always be intertwined with the memory of Guy Walter, and we wanted to name one of our races at Warwick Farm on such an important race day in honour of Guy, and for Wendy and the whole Walter family."
