Angelic Light set for Valley return

Thursday 21 August 2014, 2:18pm

Group One placegetter Angelic Light lost a year of her career through injury and she will be out to make up for lost time this spring.

The Robbie Griffiths-trained mare resumes in a competitive Carlyon Stakes at Moonee Valley on Saturday, her first start since she finished second in the Group One Robert Sangster Stakes in April last year.

The mare was in line to be tested in feature sprints 12 months ago before she sprained a tendon.

"It happened in September last year so the timing was just terrible," Griffiths said.

"She had run well in the Group One finishing second to Platelet and then she had her spell and was returning to run at Moonee Valley and she sprained it a week before we were planning on running."

Angelic Light has two wins and a second from three Moonee Valley starts.

Despite her outstanding record at the track, Griffiths cautions she is likely to need the run on Saturday after such a long layoff.

"I expect her to run her way into peak fitness so winning would be a bonus," Griffiths said.

"From a good draw you would expect her to run top-five, favouring running a place, and have us walking away from the races happy that we've got the preparation underway."

Griffiths will be guided by Angelic Light's early spring form but hopes it is good enough to warrant tackling races such as the Moir and Manikato Stakes.

"Naturally you would want to have a look at the Group Ones at Moonee Valley but we can't get ahead of ourselves," he said.

"It depends on how she returns on Saturday and what her form reads like."

Speedster Kencella, unbeaten first-up, has firmed from $5 into $3.80 TAB favouritism.

He galloped at Moonee Valley on Tuesday and trainer Chris Waller's Melbourne representative Justine Hales said the gelding was fit for his return.

"He's pretty forward," Hales said.

Shamal Wind, unbeaten in four first-up runs and over 1000m, holds the second line of betting at $4.80 ahead of the classy Villa Verde ($6).

Iconic, who finished second to Lankan Rupee at Group Two level in the autumn, is also first-up and has firmed from $15 to $9.
