The Meagher family partnership is poised to move into the top 10 trainers list after a three year apprenticeship in Brisbane.

Team Meagher - John Meagher and his sons Dan and Chris - has gradually built up its stable since moving to Brisbane's Eagle Farm in 2011.

The Meaghers had their 13th city winner and their 37th overall for the season when Shotover River won at Doomben on Saturday to be sitting just outside the top 10 trainers on the Brisbane metropolitan premiership with five meetings remaining.

"We have a big opinion of Shotover River. We took him to Melbourne last year and it was the making of him," Dan Meagher said.

Shotover River will go for a spell but he will be back next year when the Meaghers hope he will develop into a top class stayer.

"Things are going nicely at the moment but we hope to step it up a bit next season," Dan Meagher said.

The team has two runners down to run at Eagle Farm on Wednesday and another two on Saturday while Gillian Heinrich, who is one above them on the trainers' list has no metropolitan runners this week.

John Meagher is one of Australia's most famous trainers through the deeds of the Lloyd Williams-owned Melbourne Cup winner What A Nuisance and Group One stars such as Star of the Realm, Golden Sword, Ready to Explode, and Sheer Kingston.

He also had great success as a trainer in Singapore including winning the Singapore Gold Cup with Kim Angel.

Meagher returned to Australia with the aim of giving Dan and Chris a hand to build up their own racing empire.

He is also continuing on a tradition of nurturing apprentices with the recent addition to the stable of Sairyn Fawke.

Meagher's past apprentices have included future Group One stars Brett Prebble, Steven King and Aaron Spiteri.

Fawke has ridden 47 winners on country and provincial racetracks and claims three kilograms in the city.
