Excellantes books crack at Listed race

Saturday 1 February 2014, 5:15pm

Rejuvenated galloper Excellantes set up a clash with his star stablemate Fire Up Fifi when he won at Doomben on Saturday.

Excellantes ($3.70) showed he had recovered from a virus last year when he scored by three-quarters of a length over Agent Blue ($18) with a short head to Ware Ends ($17) in the Coke Zero Hcp (1200m).

Trainer Robert Heathcote said the six-year-old would now head to the Listed $100,000 Falvelon Quality (1200m) at Eagle Farm on February 22.

"He'll be taking on my other horses Fire Up Fifi and Bribie in the Falvelon. It should be some race," Heathcote said.

Fire Up Fifi, a Group Two winner during the Spring, will be having her first start since running third in the Group One Railway Stakes at Perth's Ascot course on November 23.

She worked at Eagle Farm on Saturday morning as did the other stable stars Buffering and Fillydelphia.

"They worked independently and we were pleased with them all," Heathcote said.

Excellantes was one of the horses Heathcote believes was hit by a virus which swept through his stable in September-October.

"I said at the time a lot of my horses didn't look just right. I had no choice but to spell Excellantes and a few others," he said.

Since his return Excellantes has been racing well apart from an ordinary effort at the Gold Coast on Magic Millions day.

"He just didn't seem to fire but he is back near his best now," Heathcote said.

Excellantes has now won eight races and just over $500,000.

Heathcote paid tribute to jockey Damian Browne who rode a near perfect race to land Excellantes.

"Damian did everything right. When another one wanted to lead he took a sit and that proved the winning difference," he said.

Meanwhile, trainer David Lawlor was emotional after the upset win of Noogoora Burr ($13) in the Mt Franklin Hcp (1200m).

"I have always thought he was my best horse but he hadn't won for two years because of a series of mishaps," Lawlor said.

"He injured a leg when he got it over a fence and he also got a virus.

"It has taken me a long time to get him right. But today's win is a real thrill."
