Red Excitement wins again at Rosehill

Saturday 1 February 2014, 4:55pm

Another tough win by Red Excitement has prompted thoughts of a rise in class but trainer Gerald Ryan is likely to choose a step up in distance.

The four-year-old was posted wide from the outside gate in Saturday's February Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill, something Ryan said was to his advantage.

Despite his last-start win over a similar field, Red Excitement was at $6 behind market leader Limes ($2.70) and Mecir ($3.90).

His price meant little as he wound up under vigorous riding from Brenton Avdulla to beat Limes by a neck with Charing Cross ($61) a short head third and Mecir fourth.

"He loves being out wide," Ryan said.

"He carries his head so low and being wide lets him use his stride and he doesn't get cluttered up.

"I think he is racing like he needs a mile now. We have thought about the (Group Two) Apollo Stakes but that is 1400 metres and it might be too short."

A gradual step up in distance is also in the future of All Cerise, winner of the 1400m race for three-year-old fillies.

The ATC Australian Oaks (2400m) is an ambition trainer Chris Waller has for the filly who scored a comprehensive 1-1/4 length win over Forever Loved.

Waller brought Royal Descent through the grades last year to win the fillies Classic and hopes All Cerise can make the grade.

"I think she can run a distance," Waller said.

"But she needs to get her prizemoney up and we are not putting too much pressure on her yet.

"Having the carnival in our own backyard is also a help. It keeps horses in their comfort zone."
