More Joyous can still win: Singleton

Friday 26 October 2012, 3:20pm

More Joyous' owner John Singleton concedes he is now a lot more optimistic about the mare's chances in the Cox Plate, describing his barrier row with trainer Gai Waterhouse as "boring".

Furious that Waterhouse, who had her pick of the gates at the barrier draw, selected 11, Singleton said he initially considered severing his ties with her stable.

He described her decision as "weird" but is now conciliatory, believing More Joyous can win the weight-for-age race.

"You've got to understand that I'm a pretty easy-going guy normally but even Gai, weird and wonderful though she is, that was more weird than wonderful," Singleton told radio station RSN.

"But enough of that, that's boring."

He now feels that, even though history shows More Joyous will have a tougher battle from 11, the mare is good enough to overcome the barrier.

"The thing that stops me worrying about barrier 11 is when they (are not expected to win) they do win, the best horses," he said.

"I think she's definitely the best horse in the race."

After the barrier draw fuss, Singleton insisted he would be the one to give jockey Nash Rawiller his instructions.

Now he says he won't need to tell him anything.

"There won't be any instructions," Singleton said.

More Joyous has an impressive record but Singleton said a Cox Plate win would be "everything for her".

"If she were to win the Cox Plate tomorrow she will go down as one of the all-time greats," he said.
