Fast 'N' Rocking to boost Hayes record

Friday 13 September 2013, 4:32pm

A horse who only recently shed his tag as Australia's best maiden will be shooting to break a winning drought of another kind in Saturday's $1 million Golden Rose.

Fast `N' Rocking posted his first victory in nine starts when he lowered the colours of Golden Rose favourite Prince Harada in the McNeil Stakes at Caulfield last month.

On Saturday at Rosehill he will strive to deliver trainer David Hayes his first Group One win in Sydney in more than four years, his most recent coming with Nicconi in the 2009 The Galaxy.

Hayes has relocated his training operation to the country Victoria town of Euroa in recent seasons and rebuilt his team.

He is returning as a force in the Australian training ranks and a Golden Rose win by Fast `N' Rocking would underline his national resurgence.

"I was a bit unlucky in the (2012) BMW with Americain," Hayes said.

"I've rebuilt and it's taken probably a year longer to get strong again but we're getting stronger every week and hopefully by the end of the season we'll be very strong."

Fast `N' Rocking managed top five finishes in three Group One races as a juvenile.

His McNeil triumph could be viewed as a confidence-instilling win but Hayes says Fast `N' Rocking's self esteem didn't need a boost.

He pointed to the colt's barrier trial victory at Randwick in August and the fact he was in front of Safeguard after the winning post in the Vain Stakes as vital factors in the psychology of the horse.

"If you take it from a horse's point of view and not a human's. The horse actually thinks he's won three in a row," Hayes said.

Punters are also warming to Fast `N' Rocking.

He has been backed in from $5.50 to $5 with one bookmaking firm which has predicted he will usurp Prince Harada as favourite come race day.

"I thought he deserved to be favourite," Hayes said.

"I think he's a great price and worth a bet. You can tell punters not to be frightened to have a bet on him, he's going great."

Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Brett Prebble has ridden Fast `N' Rocking at his two starts this campaign and will make the trip to Sydney to stick with him on Saturday.

While the colt has been racing in small fields at his past two starts and faces 16 rivals on Saturday, Hayes is confident he will handle the occasion.

"I'm not worried about that. He's very streetwise. He's a very experienced horse."
