Deagon races hoping for community support

Wednesday 10 July 2019, 12:04pm

Organisers of the Deagon community race day are hoping last week's postponement will see an even larger crowd attending the rescheduled meeting on Sunday.

The race day is the only meeting held each year at Deagon, in Brisbane's northern seaside area, and was scheduled for last Sunday.

However, heavy rain saw the meeting washed out.

Racing Queensland reallocated the meeting to Sunday where the feature race is the Radio Tab Wayne Wilson Handicap.

The race meeting was the idea of the late racecaller Wilson.

He called his last race there shortly before he died after a battle with cancer in 2014.

The postponement meant the food prepared for the day was donated to charity leaving the organisers and supporters facing a hefty financial loss.

Michael White, a sponsor of the day and a close friend of Wilson, said it was hoped that the extra week would give even more people a chance to attend.

"I am sure the Deagon area community and general racing community will get behind the day," he said.

Bookmaker Con Searle said it was hoped there would be 12 bookies operating on the meeting.
