Big guns poised for Coronation Cup

Thursday 4 April 2013, 9:22am

St Nicholas Abbey and Cirrus Des Aigles are among 35 entries for the Coronation Cup at Epsom on June 1.

Dunaden, winner of the 2011 Melbourne Cup and runner-up Red Cadeaux are also in the mix.

The Aidan O'Brien-trained St Nicholas Abbey has won the race for the past two seasons and showed he was as good as ever with a thrilling win in the Sheema Classic at Meydan.

"He seems to have travelled home OK and is in good form," Joseph O'Brien, who rode St Nicholas Abbey at the weekend, told At The Races.

"He's tough, he's hardy and he gives his all everyday.

"I think he's the highest-earning horse my Dad has ever trained which puts into context how high class he is.

"He could go for the Coronation Cup - you'd imagine it could be on the horizon for him."

Cirrus Des Aigles pushed Frankel close at Ascot on Champions Day and a return to Berkshire is on the cards for him at some stage now that he has recovered from injury.

"The Coronation Cup is a possible option for Cirrus Des Aigles," trainer Corinne Barande-Barbe said.

"I don't know where or when I am going to start him off this year so I just wanted to have a door open.

"It might be too hard a race to try and win first time out so we will have to see if we can do anything before then but the horse will tell me when he is ready to run.

"He is well at the moment and has totally recovered from his injury but I just want to give him time.

"The Champion Stakes at Ascot will be his big target again this year and we will also look at the King George.
