Trainer Matt Dunn won't be getting too ambitious with Zamex no matter how well the gelding performs in the Group Three Sunshine Coast Guineas.

Zamex goes to Saturday's 1600m-race off the back of two consecutive Sydney wins in Highway races which are restricted to country-trained horses.

At his most recent start on June 17, he overcame a slow start to power home from the back of the field to score on a heavy track, recording his fourth win from seven starts.

The effort marked Zamex as a horse of the future and confirmed Dunn's plan to step him up to stakes level.

"The Guineas is a good test for him. Lets face it the race is far harder than anything he has contested to date," Dunn said.

"But it was a strong win last start and 1600 metres around the Sunshine Cost track should suit him nicely."

On his last trip to Queensland Zamex ran second to Niccanova at the Gold Coast with the winner subsequently successful in the Group Three Fred Best Classic and third in the Group Two Queensland Guineas.

Win, lose or draw Zamex will head to the spelling paddock on Sunday.

"I will give him a good four-week break and then see how he looks. One thing I won't be getting too carried away no matter how he goes on Saturday," Dunn said.

"He is promising but I don't want to rush him. I will have a look at the spring for him in Sydney but if he isn't ready for it, he would make a nice summer horse here."

Zamex is raced by syndicate headed by Geoff Kerrison, a former Gold Coast Coast Turf Club committee member who has had many top horses including Group winner Amex.

The Murwillumbah-based Dunn will have a short holiday from Saturday but is already planning for next season.

"To have more than 90 winners overall this season is great but we have to build from here," he said.

Zamex is among the market leaders for the Sunshine Coast Guineas at $7 with the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Acatour the TAB's $4.20 early favourite.
