Murwillumbah called off after one race

Monday 8 May 2017, 5:48pm

The return to racing at Murwillumbah has been short-lived with the first meeting since devastating flood waters covered the track called off after the first event.

The racecourse was flooded six weeks ago but the track was given the go-ahead for Monday's meeting after an inspection in the morning.

Chief steward Mark Holloway said while most of the circuit had recovered, overnight and morning showers affected the back straight.

"We took some senior riders out before the first and we thought we could get over it, but after race one they came back and said their horses weren't handling the shifty ground," Holloway said.

"The decision was made to call off the meeting for the safety of all participants.

"The majority of the track's OK but the jockeys said the horses were not handling it."

Holloway said there was little grass cover and the additional rain meant there was water sitting on top of a part of the track.
