Anaheim gallop to decide SA Derby start

Monday 8 May 2017, 4:48pm

Connections of three-year-old Anaheim will wait to see how the colt works in a crucial track gallop before deciding whether he presses on to the Group One South Australian Derby.

The Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained colt holds a nomination for Saturday's 2500m-Classic at Morphettville, having already contested three Group One races this campaign.

Anaheim finished fifth in the Australian Guineas in Melbourne earlier this campaign before heading to Sydney where he ran fourth in the Rosehill Guineas and ninth in the Australian Derby on heavy tracks.

He then disappointed Busuttin at Caulfield last Saturday week when he ran sixth in a 2000m benchmark race won by Odeon who is the early favourite for Saturday's Derby in Adelaide.

"He was disappointing at his previous run. He raced a bit flat," Busuttin said.

"He will gallop tomorrow (Tuesday) and that will determine whether he goes to the Derby or whether he goes to the paddock.

"I would have liked to have seen him hit the line better last start, but we'll see the gallop tomorrow and see what we come up with."

Victorian-trained horses dominate the TAB's all-in market for the Derby with the Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained Odeon at $3.50 ahead of the Ciaron Maher-trained Ruthven at $5.

The Mick Price-trained Netherfield is at $6 ahead of the Darren Weir-trained Volatile Mix, while Anaheim shares the next line at $9.
