Sammy's Girl starts new era for Singleton

Monday 8 October 2012, 5:18pm

John Singleton is justifiably proud of the dynasty which has produced champion mare More Joyous and will be looking for the start of something similar with Sammy's Girl.

The first foal of three-time Group 0ne winnner Samantha Miss, Sammy's Girl is scheduled to make her debut in the two-year-old race at Rosehill on Saturday, the same day her Gai Waterhouse-trained stablemate More Joyous runs in the Toorak Handicap at Caulfield.

The 2010 winner of the race, More Joyous will carry 60kg while last year's winner King Mufhasa has 59.5kg.

More Joyous is descended from a line of Oaks winners - Sunday Joy, Joie Denise and Denise's Joy - but the furthest she has won is the 2000 metres of this year's Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Singleton paid $3.85 million for Samantha Miss at the Easter Broodmare sale after a tendon injury halted her 2009 autumn campaign.

He elected to send her to stud later that year rather than take a chance on a racetrack return and the result is the More Than Ready filly Sammy's Girl, one of 19 entries for Saturday's race.

Sammy's Girl finished second in her September 24 barrier trial.

The Toorak (1600m) attracted 14 entries in addition to the past two winners including Yosei who charged home after missing the start in Saturday's Epsom Handicap at Randwick, finishing eighth, 4-1/4 lengths from the winner Fat Al.

Singleton will also be represented in the Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield by Ironstein who is bidding to move up the order of entry for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.
