Smerdon to chase black type with Dulverton

Saturday 3 September 2016, 1:25pm

The task that now confronts Robert Smerdon is to find a black-type race for Dulverton after her return to winning form at Moonee Valley.

Dulverton landed her second metropolitan success in the William Hill Handicap on Saturday but for her breeding career she needs a victory at black-type level.

Ridden by Craig Williams, Dulverton ($5) scored by 1-1/2 lengths from Champagne Cocktail ($13) with Baby Don't Cry ($7) a nose away third.

Owned by Qatar Bloodstock, Smerdon said the outfit relied on getting results on the racetrack but were conscious of getting black type for their band of mares.

"She's won a couple of city races and we now have to try and pick up some black type before she goes off to stud," Smerdon said.

"We'll look at any black-type race where she might be able to finish top three.

"There might even be one in Adelaide that might suit."

Smerdon suggested that Dulverton could be sent to stud in the next month if he can attain that black type for the daughter on Commands.

However he said Qatar Bloodstock might consider extending her career as she was perfectly sound.

Smerdon praised the ride of Williams who summed the race up in making a mid-race move.

"I thought Craig was pretty good tactically to get going midrace when they slowed up and that made the difference," Smerdon said.
