Gauci guides Moshway to first-up victory

Ambitions to get two-year-old Moshway into the Blue Diamond didn't eventuate for Kyneton trainer Mick Sell.

But the gelding returned from a spell in Saturday's Sampson Handicap and lived up to the opinion the trainer has of the youngster by registering a late-season city win.

Moshway, by the stallion Moshe who is a brother to Black Caviar, made his debut with a minor placing in the Maribyrnong Plate last spring before a three-run campaign in January which netted one city placing and two unplaced runs including a down-the-track finish in a Blue Diamond Preview.

"He definitely showed a bit early and he's backed it up," Sell said.

"We were trying to get to the Blue Diamond but he went sore.

"So we had to turn him back out. We had to look after him and obviously it was worth looking after him."

Moshway, having his first start since January 26, was sent out at $19 and after leading he held on to defeat the fast-finishing debutant Ridgway ($4.20) by half a length with a length to Perpetual Crisis ($4.60) third.

Sell said a trial through the week showed Moshway would handle rain-affected going.

"I was confident but obviously we're in town, so you've got to watch out," Sell said.

"I was confident in the horse and Darren Gauci is a good front-running rider, so it worked out well."
