Kamacite clinches hat-trick in Doomben win

Saturday 28 May 2016, 1:26pm

Kamacite has posted a hat-trick of wins in giving champion jockey Zac Purton the perfect homecoming in the Queensland Day Stakes at Doomben.

Kamacite was heavily backed from $16 into $9 and led to ward off a late challenge from Mogador, the $3.40 favourite, to win by a short half-head.

In the process the colt reversed the result from his first start when he was runner-up to Mogador at Rosehill in June last year.

Purton won the Brisbane jockeys' premiership in 2003 before embarking on a highly successful career in Hong Kong.

"It's always good to come back and ride at this carnival because I feel I get a lot of support here," Purton said.

Trainer Tony Gollan is unsure whether to continue a winter carnival campaign with Kamacite.

"The job was to win some black type with him and we've achieved that today," Gollan said.

"There's a 1200-metre race against open company horses on Stradbroke day in a fortnight but whether we go there is something I'll discuss with the owners in the next couple of days."

Kamacite was backing up at Doomben after winning at the Sunshine Coast six days ago but Gollan was confident the colt would cope with the extra racing.

James McDonald was pleased with the effort of Mogador.

"He was very strong at the finish and is definitely looking for more ground," he said.
