Jameka draws outside gate for G1 Guineas

Wednesday 16 March 2016, 3:54pm

Trainer Ciaron Maher will weigh up a Rosehill Guineas start for Group One winner Jameka after the filly drew an outside gate.

The VRC Oaks winner is on the second line of betting for the Guineas on Saturday despite coming up with barrier 14.

"We'll just have a look at it and see whether we run," Maher said.

"There's the Vinery Stud Stakes next week.

"She's really well and worked well up there on Tuesday morning. So we've just got to work out how the race maps a bit and go from there."

Maher's preparation for Jameka included the Rosehill Guineas as it gives him the option of then pressing on to the ATC Australian Derby or wait for the ATC Australian Oaks against the filly's own sex.

She can also back up in the Vinery Stud Stakes for fillies on Saturday week.

Maher is delighted with how Jameka has progressed from her two starts in Melbourne when fourth in The Vanity and fifth in the Australian Guineas (1600m).

"She should be starting to hit her straps now," he said.

"That was the idea, for her to improve through the preparation as she did in the spring with a view to having her hit her peak for these two races over 2000 metres and a mile-and-a-half."

Victoria Derby winner Tarzino, second in the Australian Guineas last start, is the $2.40 favourite with Jameka, the only filly in the race, at $6 and Randwick Guineas winner Le Romain at $7.

Riverina Charm in 1989 is the most recent filly to win the Rosehill Guineas.

Jameka has a win over Tarzino in The Vase last preparation when she raced on speed while Tarzino closed for third.

"He didn't have a lot of luck in that race, but she has beaten him," Maher said.
