Trainer Kelly Schweida is relying on Better Than Ready's excellent fresh record to offset some fitness concerns when the colt resumes at Rosehill on Saturday.

Better Than Ready left Brisbane on Wednesday bound for Sydney where he will run in the Spotless Sprint (1100m).

The colt is unbeaten first-up and on rain-affected tracks but Schweida doesn't want to risk "flattening" the three-year-old if the going is worse than slow.

"He's a little bit soft and behind the eight-ball because of the wet weather but so is everyone else," Schweida said.

"He's got a good first up record and I've done as much as I can to get him ready for this race."

While the state of the Rosehill track is weighing heavily on Schweida's mind, it is his preferred option to run Better Than Ready on Saturday.

If he doesn't, plans to start the colt in the Group Two Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on February 16 could be in jeopardy.

"If it's a slow track I'll run him but not if it's a heavy ten because I don't want to kill him first-up," Schweida said.

"Plan B, if it's heavy at Rosehill, is to bring him back here for a 1000 metre race on Saturday week.

"But if I ran him in that race everything starts to get out of whack with the programs and he wouldn't be able to run in the Royal Sovereign which is the following week."

Winning a Group One race is Schweida's highest priority with Better Than Ready to enhance his stud value.

The Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield is a possible goal beyond the colt's Sydney campaign.

Better Than Ready will be ridden at Rosehill by Ric McMahon who is the only jockey to have won on him.
