Savoureux win the right call for Morrow

Saturday 9 January 2016, 6:21pm

As a race caller, David Morrow always had to be unbiased but there was no hiding the emotion when a horse he part-owns won at Canterbury.

The former ABC caller, Morrow now plies his trade as a football commentator and is a member of the syndicate which races the Kris Lees-trained Savoureux, winner of Saturday's Cellarbrations Handicap (1250m).

The mare was ridden by Samantha Clenton, one of six to ride the winners of the nine races with many senior jockeys at the Gold Coast Magic Millions meeting.

"I'm over the moon," Morrow said.

"Last start she finished a couple of lengths behind I Am Zelady who ran third in the race and has bolted in at the Gold Coast today.

"And it was a brilliant ride by Sam."

Lees' foreman Cameren Swan said Savoureux had had a few problems during her 13-start career but also had obvious talent, evidenced by her five wins.

"She had bone chips taken out early in her career," he said.

"Sam does a lot of work with her so we left the tactics up to her."

Clenton brought Savoureux ($10) from the back of the field to put a length on Typhoon Jolie ($7) who was ridden by Christian Reith, one of only three senior jockeys at the meeting with most at the Gold Coast Magic Millions day.
