Light muster for Waller at Moonee Valley

Friday 23 October 2015, 4:25pm

Chris Waller heads to Moonee Valley light on numbers but with Cox Plate and Crystal Mile bases seemingly well covered.

The leading Sydney trainer has Kermadec, Preferment and Winx lining up in the Cox Plate with Strawberry Boy and Amovatio his representatives in the Crystal Mile.

Strawberry Boy is a weight-for-age winner while Amovatio is tackling the conditions for the first time.

For Strawberry Boy, the Crystal Mile is a drop in grade after his past two outings in Group One company while Amovatio is rising in class that may lead to a Group One contest.

Waller said wide draws in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and Toorak Handicap had taken a toll on Strawberry Boy at Caulfield, noting the gelding looks well placed on Saturday.

"He's a Moonee Valley type of horse," Waller said.

"He'll roll along freely and hopefully get them chasing."

Waller has Emirates Stakes plans for Amovatio before a possible trip to Perth for the summer carnival.

Amovatio made it three wins in succession when successful first-up at Caulfield, however Waller is concerned with the barrier draw.

"It was a beautiful, patient ride and luck went his way first-up," Waller said.

"He's drawn twelve of twelve on Saturday and he probably won't get the same luxury of that run, but if he goes well he'll go to the Emirates.

"Originally we were going to go straight to Perth but it's silly to be going to Perth when you've got a million-dollar race in your backyard."

Waller's only other Moonee Valley runner is Ballet Suite in the Tesio Stakes.
