Herbert Power win gains Amralah Cup berth

Saturday 10 October 2015, 4:49pm

Amralah has gained automatic entry into next week's Caulfield Cup with his impressive win in the Herbert Power Stakes at Caulfield.

But the imported stayer is not guaranteed to take his place in the field.

Nick Williams, representing the ownership group that also includes his father Lloyd, said it would be a big ask for Amralah to run for the third time in as many weeks.

"We'll get him home and see how he is," Williams said.

"I don't know if he'll back-up next week at this point.

"It's a big ask to back up three weeks in a row, but with 51-1/2 (kilograms), it makes it tempting.

"I'm sure at Flemington in November he's going to have to carry quite a bit more than that now as that was visually impressive."

Ridden by Hugh Bowman and starting favourite, Amralah($3.60) overcame a tardy beginning before scoring a 3/4 length win from Excess Knowledge ($5) with Bohemian Lily ($6.50) a length away third.

Amralah jumped well before stumbling and settled back in the field.

Nearing the 1200m, Bowman elected to take advantage of the slow pace and headed forward, taking the lead at the 900m.

"My momentum was there and I only had to slip up outside the leader and she was coming back more, so I thought rhythm, rhythm is the key," Bowman said.

"The plan was to be first three or four and it would have been a more textbook race if that was the case.

"Can he back up again next week and then peak for the Melbourne Cup? That's not for me to judge, but he's a good horse."

Amralah firmed from $41 to $13 for the Caulfield Cup and from $81 to $18 for the Melbourne Cup.

He cannot be penalised for the Caulfield Cup while Racing Victoria handicapper Greg Carpenter will announce a penalty, if any, for the Melbourne Cup on Monday.
