Flamboyant Lass to tackle spring G1

Wednesday 26 August 2015, 5:32pm

Gai Waterhouse believes she has unearthed another Group One prospect after Flamboyant Lass blew away her older rivals at Warwick Farm.

The trainer declared her intention to target either the Thousand Guineas or the Flight Stakes with the filly.

Flamboyant Lass ($3) sat three wide during the Schweppes Handicap (1000m) before showing strong acceleration to win by 3-1/4 lengths from Floral Insight ($9) with Quietly Brilliant ($4.20) another length away third on Wednesday.

Waterhouse said the effort by Flamboyant Lass to overcome a wide run and still comfortably defeat experienced mares and geldings showed her class.

"She was really racing in the death (seat) throughout this race and came right away from them," Waterhouse said.

"I want her to go to a nice Group Two and then the ultimate aim will be either the Thousand Guineas or the Flight Stakes."

Flamboyant Lass was placed in the Group Two Blue Diamond Prelude in her two-year-old season but Waterhouse opted to send her to a midweek race first-up, rather than take on a stronger Saturday race.

"A few of the owners said, `why isn't she starting on Saturday?' and I said 'small fish are sweet'."

Jockey Tim Clark said the filly was still learning how to race and showed scope for improvement.

"It's not an easy task taking on the older horses," Clark said.

"There were horses in the race that had won more races than she had ever contested, so for her to come here and do that, it's a good sign."

Both 1600m races, the Flight Stakes is at Randwick on October 3 while the Thousand Guineas will be run the following Saturday at Caulfield.
