G1 milestone looms for Kerrin McEvoy

Wednesday 26 August 2015, 4:26pm

Kerrin McEvoy's decision to ride at the Memsie Stakes meeting at Caulfield on Saturday could prove pivotal to his spring plans.

It also has the potential to offer up a career milestone.

The Sydney-based McEvoy has been enticed to Melbourne by a book of rides he believes could carry him much deeper into the spring carnival, headed by four-year-old Hi World in the Memsie Stakes.

McEvoy has already enjoyed success with Hi World's trainer this week, winning his only ride at Warwick Farm on Wednesday aboard the Peter Moody-trained Amelie's Star.

He is hoping to parlay that into a Memsie Stakes success that will net him a significant Group One achievement.

"It will be nice to get the next one. That will be my 50th (Group One win)," McEvoy said.

"Hi World showed last time he can compete at 1400, even though a mile and 2000 metres are probably his best trip.

"I'm unsure if he's proper Group One class as a four-year-old but we're going to find out.

"He's furnished. He feels as though he's grown into himself a bit more.

"He's only an early four-year-old and he's heading into his biggest test to date but we'll start him at the top and see where he gets to."

Hi World forms part of a rich book of Caulfield rides for McEvoy who will also partner Bounding for Peter and Paul Snowden in the Group Three shark.com.au Stakes.

Gai Waterhouse has snapped him up for three rides including Cosmic Endeavour in the William Hill Sprint Series Heat 1 Stakes and her stablemate Excess Knowledge in the Heatherlie Stakes.

Saturday isn't McEvoy's first visit to Melbourne this season and the jockey could be an early-spring staple if his rides on Saturday perform to expectation.

"A lot depends on these types of horses and whether they can win or run good races," McEvoy said.

"I'm riding up here in Sydney next week and then we will see where we go."
