Decision Time wins 1st race for two years

Saturday 22 August 2015, 5:54pm

Clarry Conners has trained the winners of four Golden Slippers but rates Decision Time's victory in the Group Three Show County Quality at Randwick as one of the highlights of his career.

The eight-year-old was the $31 outsider in the Group Three 1200m sprint but showed his talent when he led all the way to hold off a challenge from Boss Lane ($10) by a neck on Saturday.

As a two-year-old, Decision Time finished second in the Golden Slipper to Crystal Lily.

Injuries and a bleeding attack have interrupted his career and his last win came almost two years ago when he took out the Group Three Concorde Stakes.

"He's part of the family," Conners said.

"He hasn't won for two years. He's broken down with tendons twice, He's bled.

"To get him back is just marvellous. For him to win today has been one of the highlights of my life as a trainer."

Conners said the horse benefited from weight relief, carrying 54kg to victory.

"Getting the weight off him has been a hard job, and keeping him sound and everything else, but I'm pretty chuffed with the win I'll tell you," he said.

"We know how good he is. When you've had leg problems, you never push him on the track, you just nurse and nurse."

Conners said another tilt at the Concorde Stakes was a possibility after the son of Foreplay showed good speed from the barrier.

Jockey Christian Reith paid tribute to Conners' training performance.

"You've got these old horses. They race at the top level, season-in, season-out and to keep them up and keep them racing with confidence is very hard," Reith said.
