Andrew McNamara has bowed out in style with victory on Most Honourable at Tramore as he prepares to embark on a new life as a trainer.
The 32-year-old brother of Robbie McNamara and cousin of JT McNamara, who have both suffered serious injuries in recent years, was keen to stress a problem with his back and constant battle with the scales had more influence on his decision.
"People might think that I am retiring due to my brother Robbie's and my cousin JT McNamara's injuries but I have had back trouble plaguing me and between my height and keeping my weight right I am now moving on to what I always wanted to do - training," McNamara said.
A multiple Grade One-winning rider, the Irishman famously enjoyed victory in the 2006 Queen Mother Champion Chase when Newmill scored at Cheltenham in 2006.
Other big wins in his 16-year career came on the likes of Beef Or Salmon, Sizing Europe and Hidden Cyclone.
"I consider myself very privileged in my career. I left college to pursue my childhood dream as a jockey and have ridden just under 500 winners," McNamara said.
"Horse racing is my way of life and I am looking forward to moving on to the next phase, training racehorses."
