Weir gets closer to 300 with Pakenham win

Tuesday 28 July 2015, 5:24pm

Darren Weir has edged closer to the magical 300 mark with a winner at Pakenham.

Weir is just two winners shy of the mark after Biatreasure landed the prize in the final event at Tuesday's nine race program.

Australia's leading trainer last season with 253 winners, Weir has three meetings left to achieve the milestone.

He has four runners engaged at Cranbourne on Wednesday and another two at Sale on Thursday.

Weir has 11 runners nominated for the final meeting of the season at Pakenham on Friday with acceptances to be taken on Wednesday morning.

David Hayes was the first Australian trainer to top the 300 win mark in the 1990s with John Hawkes passing the mark in 2002/03.
