Royal Ascot-bound colts please in jump-out

Friday 29 May 2015, 1:17pm

Brazen Beau and Wandjina have topped off their preparations for Royal Ascot in a competitive Flemington jump-out, pleasing trainers Chris Waller and Gai Waterhouse.

Brazen Beau, from the Waller stable, beat the Waterhouse-trained Wandjina by a half length over 800 metres on Friday morning with the pair clearing out by about four lengths on the other two horses, Sea Lord and Viking Ransom.

The two fly out from Australia on Wednesday accompanied by the Robert Smerdon-trained Shamal Wind who ran in a Cranbourne barrier trial earlier this week.

"It's hard to assess straight after they trial but it looked like they all jumped together, gradually built momentum and were very solid on the line - both Brazen Beau and Wandjina," Waller said.

"That's exactly what we wanted to see a few weeks out from a very big race on the other side of the world."

"It's a little bit hard to determine how fit they need to be, where they need to be and when they need to be there, but I think our preparation has been very smooth and I wouldn't change anything that's happened up to date."

Waller is yet to lock in which Royal Ascot sprint Brazen Beau contests and says the decision will be made as late as possible.

The King's Stand Stakes (1000m) is on June 16 and the Diamond Jubilee (1200m) five days later.

"With Brazen Beau, he needs a good track so that's very important that he is running on a good surface so I guess the weather will determine which way we head," Waller said.

"If the weather suggested it was going to be a really fine week, I'd be leaning towards the Diamond Jubilee over 1200 metres."

Gai Waterhouse is also convinced Wandjina is on target for the Diamond Jubilee.

"We wouldn't be going unless we were confident," Waterhouse said.

"Now it just takes a little bit of luck. And Ollie (Damien Oliver) will be the right man for the job.

"He's a great thinking jockey and he's riding on the Tuesday before, which I'm pleased about."

Brazen Beau, a two-time Group One winner over the straight 1200 metres at Flemington, has not started since his Newmarket Handicap win in March.

Wandjina won the Australian Guineas in March before being beaten in a photo finish to the Group One All Aged Stakes (1400m) on April 18.
