Cummings predicts Rise in Lunar's fortunes

Friday 29 May 2015, 1:01pm

James Cummings is unsure if Lunar Rise will ever fulfil the potential he showed as a spring three-year-old but he is certain the horse still has something to offer.

Lunar Rise was placed behind It's A Dundeel in the 2012 Gloaming Stakes and trained on to win a Group Three race during that year's Melbourne Cup carnival.

Sent Hong Kong, Lunar Rise couldn't recapture his best Australian form and finished down the track in four starts.

"He went to Hong Kong, had a few starts there and never adapted so he's back here," trainer James Cummings said.

"I think he's probably at that level where he can race through the benchmarks now. He's a five-year-old gelding so we can pick our mark with him.

"If he raced himself right back to the top then who knows? I think he's probably not going to get back to where he was but he's enjoying himself and enjoying his training and while he's doing that it's worthwhile taking on the Saturday prize money."

Lunar Rise resumed after almost a year off with an indifferent run on a soft track at Randwick in April.

But the addition of blinkers and a genuine tempo sparked a return to form last start when he closed for third to You'll Never over 1350m at Rosehill.

Apprentice Koby Jennings will be trying to do what three world-class jockeys couldn't achieve when he rides Aeronautical in the Octagonal Handicap.

Damien Oliver, Douglas Whyte and Craig Williams rode Aeronautical through an extended Melbourne campaign but they weren't able to coax a win out of the sprinter.

"He's had a wide range of jockeys on his back and more often than not some of the best around," trainer Lionel Cohen said.

"And sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't."

Jennings rode a double at Kembla Grange on Thursday and he will claim 3kg on Aeronautical as the Newmarket Handicap placegetter tries to break through for his first win since taking out the Razor Sharp Handicap in December, 2013.

Aeronautical is nudging double figures in a betting market dominated by Amovatio ($4.20) and You'll Never ($4.20) from the Chris Waller stable.
