Whatalovelyday earns winter carnival tilt

Saturday 7 March 2015, 6:37pm

Underrated filly Whatalovelyday survived a false start and a whack on the mouth to cement a winter carnival campaign at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

Trainer Jon Walk had pencilled in to take Whatalovelyday to Sydney for the Group One Queen Of The Turf Stakes at Randwick on April 11.

However, he decided to ditch those plans when Whatalovelyday ($7) steamed home to win the Creative Stone Handicap (1600m) at the second attempt to run the race.

The filly is now headed to the Group Two Queensland Guineas and possibly the Group One Stradbroke Handicap at Doomben in June.

Her win didn't come without its moments of drama because when the start was effected only gates one, two and five opened with the rest of the field coming out in staggered order.

The runners were restrained and the starter declared it a false start with all horses vetted before Tale Of Fortune was declared a late scratching.

Whatalovelyday returned to scale with blood in her mouth after she struck the barrier gate when jumping the first time.

Walk said a Sydney trip had been shelved with Whatalovelyday to spell immediately.

"We will bring her back for the Queensland Guineas and if she wins that we might even run her in the Group One Stradbroke Handicap - you have to dream," Walk said.

Tough galloper The Peak will head home to Sydney on Sunday after giving the James and Bart Cummings combination their first Queensland winner in the National Construction Management Handicap (1400m).

Bart Cummings has trained hundreds of winners in Queensland dating back to Fulmen's win in the 1967 Brisbane Cup but The Peak was the first for his combination with his grandson James.

The Cummings combination won the Group One Randwick Guineas and left The Peak in the hands of stable representative Sean Shield.

"The Peak has done the job in Queensland winning nearly $50,000 in two starts with a win and a third. But he will head back to Sydney racing now," Shield said.
