Gollan chalks up 50th city win of season

Wednesday 4 March 2015, 6:11pm

Premier trainer Tony Gollan notched his 50th metropolitan win of the season as he continued to plunder midweek maidens at Ipswich on Wednesday.

Gollan is on track to break Bruce McLachlan's Brisbane training record of 78 city wins in a racing term, a mark McLachlan set in 1987-88.

Since February 4, Gollan has trained the winners of seven metropolitan-class midweek maidens and says increased prize money has prompted him to attack those races with his better horses.

Two of those wins came at Ipswich on Wednesday with first starter Sheiswhatsheis ($1.60) providing the first leg of a double when she won the XXXX Gold Maiden Plate.

Gollan said the filly had shown ability on the training track and was a nice style of horse.

"It looked the right race for her and she had jumped out well a couple of times," Gollan said.

"But it wasn't the strongest maiden we have seen."

A race later Marlon Lad ($6.50) stormed home to win the Corona at ITC Maiden Plate (1200m).

"He's had a few chances but again, it was the right race for him," Gollan said.

Jockey Tegan Harrison continued her good run with a double on Sheiswhatsheis and Queen Of The Lochs who took out the Sirromet 5 Star Winery Open Handicap (1200m).

Trainer Mick Mair scratched Queen Of The Lochs from both the Gold Coast and Doomben last Saturday because of wet tracks.

The mare led and fought on well when challenged under her 59.5kg top weight, providing a timely boost for Mair who is recovering from a minor stroke.

Former champion jockey Chris Munce was back in the winner's circle when Lucky Black claimed the Enjoy Heineken Handicap (1000m).

Munce retired from the saddle in January and Lucky Black gave him his second win as a trainer after Specific Choice was successful last week.
