Unequivocal set for Provincial qualifier

Wednesday 4 March 2015, 5:28pm

A year after a serious injury ended Unequivocal's shot at the Golden Slipper, trainer Noel Mayfield-Smith has the filly ready to make up for lost time.

In her first start since an abbreviated spring and summer campaign, Unequivocal will go out as one of the chances in a $100,000 Provincial Championship qualifier at Wyong on Thursday.

If she can earn a place in the $300,000 decider during The Championships, there will be no more deserving finalist than the three-year-old filly.

"She split a pastern in a gallop one morning and it had to be screwed together," Mayfield-Smith said.

"She shied at a fox and that's when she did the injury."

As part of a rehabilitation program, Mayfield-Smith sent Unequivocal to Melbourne to train with his top sprinter Famous Seamus during last year's spring carnival to relieve pressure on her leg.

Unequivocal has a middle gate and she resumes after being given an easy barrier trial at Hawkesbury.

"She went back in the field and worked home to the line quite well," Mayfield-Smith said.

A capacity field will line up in the first of five provincial heats with the Kim Waugh-trained Oxford Poet the best backed since markets opened.

Oxford Poet will take strong Sydney form into the race after winning at Rosehill in January before ending up on the wrong end of a three-way finish there at his latest start.
