Griffiths mares set to clash at Flemington

Tuesday 3 March 2015, 5:32pm

Two mares at different stages of their preparations will representive Robbie Griffiths in the same race at Flemington on Saturday.

Griffiths will saddle up Girl In Flight and Nadeem Lass in the Group Three Frances Tressady Stakes (1400m).

Nadeem Lass has fitness on her side after two recent runs in Tasmania while Girl In Flight is first-up following a break.

Girl In Flight hasn't raced since finishing a narrow second to Suavito, winner of the Futurity Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday, in a 2000-metre race at Flemington last November.

"The form around her reads really well," Griffiths said.

"Suavito beat her a lip last time in and that's good form.

"She's going really well. She's got room for improvement but I expect to see a forward run on Saturday as she's always competitive first-up."

Griffiths said Girl In Flight will head to the Sunline Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on March 27 after which a decision will be made on whether to run in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes at Randwick on April 11 or head to Adelaide.

Nadeem Lass was taken to Tasmania to contest two black-type races with Griffiths describing the trip for the mare as having one-and-a-half runs.

"The first run there was a half," he said.

"She never got off the bit with Nick Hall and just couldn't get a crack, so we decided to leave her down there."

After the sixth placing at Hobart, Nadeem Lass was beaten in a three-way photo at Launceston on February 18.

Griffiths said Nadeem Lass was an unlucky horse that should have a better record than her two wins from 30 starts.

"She goes there very fit which is a big plus and she might have the edge on Girl In Flight," Griffiths said.
