Her first attempt at motherhood may have been a failure but Thump's second racetrack career is off to a flying start.
The Kris Lees-trained mare has scored a tough first-up win in Saturday's Group Three Triscay Stakes (1200m) at Randwick, giving jockey Tye Angland a stakes double following the surprise Light Fingers win of Adrift.
Thump was retired after she finished a long last in the Toy Show Quality in August and was found to have suffered cardiac arrhythmia.
"She went to stud to Fastnet Rock but didn't get in foal so the owner decided to give her another preparation," Lees said.
"Her target is the Coolmore Classic. I was a bit concerned today because she has been off for a long time.
"Tye gave her the perfect ride which also helped."
In a bunched finish, Thump ($12) edged out Danesiri ($26) by a short neck with another neck to My Sabeel ($12) with favourite and topweight Cosmic Endeavour ($3.30) fourth under 60kg.
For Angland, the double was a great way to settle into the upcoming carnival.
"I came here with a good book of rides and it's great to come away with a Group double," he said.
"She got the perfect run in the race and will improve. She beat some smart ones so there is upside.
"Hopefully I can keep the momentum going."
Former New Zealand mare Telepathic gave premier trainer Chris Waller a double after she won the benchmark 85 (1400m) to go with Heart Testa's Group Three victory in the Southern Cross Stakes (1200m).
"Heart Testa has found his level and his right distance," Waller said.
"Telepathic doesn't show a lot on the track but she certainly brought it on raceday.
"We will look at stakes races for her now."
