Zebulon out to press Gr1 Guineas claims

Thursday 12 February 2015, 1:52pm

Zebulon didn't live up to expectations in the spring but connections expect him to fulfil his potential in the autumn.

Zebulon resumes in the Group Two Autumn Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday, his first start since being gelded and will be out to confirm plans to target next month's Australian Guineas.

"I'll be really disappointed if he didn't give it a fair shake (on Saturday)," co-trainer Craig Widdison said.

Zebulon defeated Profit Share at Flemington at his second start as a two-year-old before placing in the Listed Taj Rossi Series Final (1600m).

He caught the eye first-up as a three-year-old when closing for third to Merion and Chivalry in the Listed Living Legends Stakes but failed in the Bill Stutt Stakes and Caulfield Guineas.

But in encouraging signs, Zebulon has won a Cranbourne trial in preparation for the Autumn Stakes.

"We've always thought he was going to be a pretty smart horse so it's time for him to deliver," Widdison said.

Widdison and co-trainer Peter Morgan have most of their autumn carnival hopefuls stepping out on Saturday.

Eloping runs in the Group Two Rubiton Stakes while Star Rolling lines up in the CF Orr Stakes.

Three-year-old Eloping shares the second line of Rubiton betting at $7 but will be up against $1.50 favourite Chautauqua.

Eloping has 5.5kg less than Chautauqua but Widdison is not sure that's enough for the filly to challenge the favourite.

"You would think on what he (Chautauqua) has shown that he's going that it probably won't be enough," Widdison said.
