Winx named NSW champion of the year

Champion mare Winx has claimed another accolade, being named the NSW Horse of the Year.

Winx capped a big night at Thursday's NSW Racehorse Owners awards for the Chris Waller stable with Winx also the champion miler, Press Statement the champion three-year-old, Preferment the champion middle distance performer and Libran champion stayer.

Stable employee Ali Iftikhar earned the Sydney Strapper of the Year award.

Golden Slipper winner Capitalist was the two-year-old of the year, Chautauqua best sprinter and Victorian mare Azkadellia the Queen of the Autumn.

Fell Swoop, second to Chautauqua, in the TJ Smith Stakes was the country champion while Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Lucia Valentina the provincial winner.

Winx was unbeaten in seven starts during 2015/16 with her wins including the Cox Plate and the Doncaster Mile.

She will begin her new season in Saturday's Group Two Warwick Stakes at Randwick.
