Tango Rain dances away to Canterbury win

Saturday 23 July 2016, 12:47pm

Tango Rain's second win from as many starts has trainer Gerald Ryan favouring the San Domenico Stakes as his next assignment.

The colt was heavily backed from $8.50 into $4.40 before the race and led all the way to win a 1200m two-year-old race at Canterbury on Saturday.

Tang Rain beat $3.10 favourite Thronum by 1-1/4 lengths, with Hair Trigger ($4.80) a neck away in third.

"He's a great style of horse," Ryan said.

"We've just got to try and make a stallion out of him."

Ryan said he had doubts over whether Tango Rain would be effective over 1400m in the Group One Golden Rose Stakes.

Instead, he favours the Group Three San Domenico (1100m) on August 13 at his home track at Rosehill as a target race for the colt.

Ryan said Tango Rain wore blinkers in his races to help him relax going into the barriers.

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy said the blinkers helped the colt shoot to the lead from barrier seven.

"Today we were able to get to the front just to offset the draw a bit," McEvoy said.

"He was able to control the race from there."

Tango Rain is one of a few young horses retained by Teeley Assets after Muzaffar Yaseen had a dispersal sale of much of his stock in 2015.

He is one of two colts sent to Ryan's stable by Teeley along with Star Of Monsoon.
