Butterboom wins after sister scores

Saturday 18 June 2016, 2:13pm

Just a couple of hours after Foxplay broke her maiden at Rosehill, her elder sibling Butterboom has countered with her first win since March.

The Chris Waller-trained two-year-old Foxplay had an easier time on the opening race on Saturday but Butterboom ($8) showed her toughness with a half-length win over Flamboyant Lass ($4.40 favourite) and Magic Of Dreams ($11), who could not be separated for second.

Butterboom's trainer Joe Pride said he thought the application of blinkers had been the key to the mare's victory in the Schweppes Handicap (1200m).

"It was a good win today and I think the blinkers worked," Pride said.

"All trainers are different as to when they put them on.

"I sometimes put them on horses too soon. I learned a lot from John Size and he used to leave it as long as possible.

"I think they can give a horse a shake-up and get them to concentrate.

"It was a good win and I don't think we paid as much for her as they paid for Foxplay."

Champion Thoroughbreds paid $40,000 for the Myboycharlie filly out of Butters which would become Butterboom while Star Thoroughbreds paid four times as much for her Foxwedge half sister.

While Waller has stakes aspirations for Foxplay, Pride said Butterboom was more likely to keep racing in similar grade.

"She had to carry 61 kilos last time and up a bit in class she had 56 today," he said.

"It's sometimes hard to place these mares once they win a midweek race but now she's won this we will keep going."
