Vandyke's first win as a Queenslander

Saturday 18 June 2016, 12:40pm

Former Warwick Farm trainer David Vandyke has scored his first metropolitan win since his full-time move to Queensland.

Vandyke's mare Blackjack Bella ($4) scored by a short half head to Outraged ($3.60) in the Ipswich Mile (1666m) on Saturday.

They had a huge gap on the rest of the field with Heart Of A Warrior ($3.40 favourite) in third place 6 3/4 lengths away.

Vandyke moved part of his team to Caloundra in late April but didn't shut his southern operation completely until last week.

He won two metropolitan races with Look To the Stars and Maurus last month but Blackjack Bella is his first city winner as a full-time Queensland trainer.

"I have had three seconds of late and I thought when Outraged came out of the pack it might be another. But she is an honest mare and she always fights back," he said.

Vandyke said he was still feeling his way in Queensland and had no high ambitions for his first season.

"It will take us a while to settle in but down the track with hope to be a high competitor in Queensland," he said.

Vandyke got his first Group One winner this season when Yankee Rose won the ATC Sires Produce Stakes in the autumn.
