Foxplay toys with her rivals at Rosehill

Saturday 18 June 2016, 12:28pm

Winter racing doesn't always translate to spring riches but it's a method trainer Chris Waller has used successfully in the past.

Sydney's premier trainer hopes the formula works with two-year-old Foxplay, which broke through for her first win at Rosehill on Saturday.

The filly was backed from late $1.85 to $1.65 to win the 2YO Hcp (1350m) and didn't let her supporters down, making light of the soft surface to win by three lengths from Cogliere ($7.50).

While not aiming too high just yet, Waller said both Group One winning sprinter Japonisme and champion stablemate Winx raced successfully throughout the latter months of their juvenile seasons.

"Japonisme was winning these types of races last winter," Waller said.

"And Winx was the same as a two-year-old.

"It's just a question of keeping them fit and racing well and they can go on into the spring.

"You can't underestimate Sydney Saturday form and this filly will take confidence from the win."

Waller said Foxplay would have another start over 1400 metres in two weeks.

"She's still learning but if she can race well in a couple of weeks we can look at something in the spring," he said.

Foxplay races in the colour of Denese Martin's Star Thoroughbreds syndication company and cost $160,000 at last year's Magic Millions sale.
