Sam Clipperton and Brenton Avdulla have escaped unscathed from a bizarre barrier incident before the first race at Rosehill.

With the field for the 2YO Plate reduced to seven because of wet track scratchings, Clipperton's mount Nemrud reared up in his gate and ended up on his back in the next stall.

He eventually crawled out between the hind legs of Avdulla's mount Sinopia who stood quietly after taking attendants several efforts to load in the first place.

Both colts were scratched with chief steward Ray Murrihy saying he had never seen anything like it.

"If you do this job long enough you will see everything," Murrihy said.

"It is a miracle everyone is OK."

Neither of the young horses was injured while Clipperton and Avdulla both jumped off as the event unfolded.

Amber Isle ($4.40) led the field of five but was overtaken by Pittsburgh ($4.60) in the straight with $2.10 favourite on Faraway Town on the rail.

Pittsburgh looked to have a winning break but Faraway Town kept grinding away to join him and win by a nose with Cool In Black another 1-1/4 lengths third.

The winner's trainer Matthew Smith now has the $2 million Magic Millions Classic at the Gold Coast in January firmly in his sights with the filly's earnings at $85,500 from her win and a debut second.

"That should get her in and that's the race we have always had in mind," Smith said.

"Halfway up the straight I was resigned to her coming second but I'm glad Jay (Ford) didn't see it that way.

"She still does a bit wrong and we have learned more about her today."
