Amexed has the chance to put his career back on track when he steps out at Doomben for his first race in almost a year.

The gelding was rated one of Queensland's best staying prospects when he ran fourth in the Group Three Rough Habit Plate and fifth in the Group One Queensland Derby as a three-year-old.

However, his three runs in the spring-summer of last year were well below standard and trainer Tony Gollan sent him for a long spell.

Amexed will be having his first start since November when he lines up in the Canadian Club Handicap (1350m) at Doomben on Saturday.

"We couldn't put our finger on exactly what was wrong. We sent him out to get X-rays and couldn't find anything wrong," Gollan said.

Gollan hopes the time off has done the trick with Amexed and he believes the gelding will improve on whatever he does on Saturday.

"He did win a jump-out in nice fashion," Gollan said.

"But it will be too short for him on Saturday. He will be out the back with another of my stayers Highly Gentle and they will probably be running home together in the straight."

Amexed will have two more runs before he steps out to 2000m next month.

"I am looking forward to getting him out to 2000 metres and further. I have always had a high opinion of him and he has a touch of class," Gollan said.

The trainer also expects former French gelding Highly Gentle, who won two staying races before a spell, to improve on whatever she does on Saturday.

Another of Gollan's runners on Saturday is former Sydney sprinter Casual Choice in the Brisbane Novotel Handicap (1200m).

Casual Choice, who was placed twice at Rosehill behind the smart Shiraz in July, was formerly with Joe Pride at Warwick Farm.

"He has come along nicely since he joined us and should race well from a good barrier," Gollan said.
