Barrier boost for Kennewell Ipswich pair

Friday 12 June 2015, 12:33pm

Adelaide trainer Lloyd Kennewell believes good barriers for his runners on Saturday give him a genuine chance to join his father on the Ipswich feature-race honour board.

Kennewell's father Gary won the 2013 Listed Eye Liner Stakes with the top-class sprinter Conservatorium.

Lloyd has had his share of success in Queensland and won this year's Magic Millions Guineas with Deiheros.

He will saddle up Nite Rocker in the Eye Liner and Baligari in the Ipswich Cup.

"They have both drawn barrier four and that is a big advantage from both starts," Kennewell said.

Nite Rocker ran last behind Into The Red in the Ascot Handicap at his last start but Kennewell said the run should be ignored.

"They went out in very fast time in that race and Nite Rocker was caught three deep without cover in the lead," he said.

"He had to stop the way the race was run. From the better barrier on Saturday he should get a nice run and I would expect him to race well," Kennewell said.

At his previous start Nite Rocker ran third to Charlie Boy in the BRC Sprint over the 1350m of Saturday's race.

Kennewell said Baligari had little luck in Queensland, including his last-start second to Faust at Doomben.

"He beat the eventual Brisbane Cup winner Jetset Lad home in that race. He is the one who has been holding it all together and has been thriving in Queensland."

"He should be able to get cover from that barrier and I would expect him to be hard to beat."

Ric McMahon, who the Magic Millions Guineas on Deiheros, will ride both of Kennewell's runners.
