Kavanagh calls on Williams for Cup ride

Thursday 14 May 2015, 2:16pm

Sam Kavanagh has negotiated a logistical tightrope to clinch top Victorian jockey Craig Williams to partner Tales Of Grimm in Friday's $200,000 Scone Cup.

A suspension to regular rider Kerrin McEvoy at Doomben on Saturday led Kavanagh on a hunt for a suitable replacement.

He called Williams and the hoop was keen to fill the void - provided he could make the tricky journey from the NSW Hunter Valley to Adelaide in time to ride at the Goodwood meeting on Saturday.

"There was a lot of to-ing and fro-ing because we had to try to get him back to Adelaide for the Group One the next day," Kavanagh said.

"I think he's one of the best jockeys in Australia. He's had a few rides for me since I started training and he hasn't ridden a winner for me so I hope he lifts his game for me."

Tales Of Grimm, a dual acceptor for the Scone carnival, has been scratched from the Luskin Star Stakes on Saturday to concentrate on the Cup.

Kavanagh said Friday's 1600m feature was always his preferred target and an ideal barrier draw sealed the deal.

"The Cup was always the race I had in mind. His best form in England was around a mile and he loves racing fresh," he said.

Tales Of Grimm hasn't raced since his midfield finish behind Rugged Cross over 1400m at Randwick last month when he was blocked from the 200m.

He was also tardy to jump that day, a habit Kavanagh has been working to rectify.

Tales Of Grimm is an $8.50 chance with the Chris Waller-trained Strawberry Boy a $6 favourite.

Williams will ride Kavanagh's three remaining runners at Scone on Friday including Summit Breath who is set to bypass a stakes race on Saturday in preference for the Segenhoe Stud Class 1 Handicap.
