Skyclad an impressive Rosehill 2YO winner

Saturday 9 May 2015, 12:10pm

Two decades after he trained Make Mine Paris in Melbourne, Gerald Ryan has produced her grandson Skyclad at Rosehill for what he hopes is the first of many wins.

The two-year-old crossed from the outside barrier to assume the lead in the 1100m handicap and was never headed.

Specked from $16 to $13, Skyclad wandered a little wide in the straight but still had a length to spare on Lycia ($10) with another Ryan-trained juvenile, Backstab ($13) a short neck third.

Favourite Encosta Line ($2.80) weakened in the straight after tracking the winner to the turn and finished in front of only one other runner.

"I've had a big opinion of him from the work go," Ryan said.

"I trained his grandmother when I was in Melbourne and he's by Snitzel so that's a factor as well.

"We have run out of time to take him to Brisbane but I do think he had a bright future so we will probably give him one more run and get him ready for the spring."

Ryan, who trained Snitzel to win the 2006 Oakleigh Plate, has had much success with his progeny highlighted by last year's Lightning Stakes winner Snitzerland.

At his first start, Skyclad finished third behind Volier who went on to run second in the Group Two Silver Slipper.

Ryan also has high hopes for Backstab who is from the family of Group One winner Super Elegant.

"He is bred to do well and he has always shown he will be a good three-year-old so I'm pleased with his run today," Ryan said.
