Tony Gollan getting into carnival groove

Friday 10 April 2015, 12:05pm

Premier Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan will open his winter carnival assault with a large contingent at Doomben.

Gollan was in Sydney for the Australian Easter Yearling Sale this week but his mind was firmly on Saturday's Doomben meeting where he will have a major hand.

He has 11 runners including key competitors in the features - the Listed Tails Stakes and the Listed Chief De Beers Handicap.

Rocket To Glory, The Storeman and Whiskey Allround run in the Chief De Beers while Hi Son and Best Of The Rest clash in the Tails.

Two-year-old Secret Saga, Pienkna and open-class handicapper Gundy Spirit head the rest of Gollan's Doomben team.

The trainer expects to have as many as 20 runners in winter carnival feature races this year.

"Almost all these runners are being set for various races in the winter carnival," Gollan said.

"But most of these aren't the runners I have earmarked for the major races.

"I have another seven or eight horses to come back in the following fortnight."

Gollan has made a conscious decision to target the Brisbane winter carnival, rather than The Championships at Randwick.

"I tossed up taking Secret Saga south for the Percy Sykes Stakes on Saturday at Randwick but when she got beaten at her last start I thought she wasn't ready," he said.

"I think Rocket To Glory, The Storeman and Whiskey Allround can be competitive in the Listed and lower Group sprints in the winter.

"Hi Son is looking at the Hollindale Cup in a fortnight while Best Of The Rest will tackle races like the Ipswich Cup."

Gollan nominated Pienkna as the best chance of his remaining runners on Saturday.

"We have given her a break and she is going OK but the outside alley on Saturday is no help," he said.

Gollan has trained 59 metropolitan winners this season, 16 more than nearest rival Robert Heathcote.
