Much-travelled apprentice Ryan Hurdle celebrated his return to Queensland in winning the Racezone National Apprentices Series race at the Sunshine Coast on Wednesday.
The race was the second in a series run across Australia in an effort to give apprentices exposure riding in different states.
Hurdle gave Mr Alfranco ($8) a perfect run before coming away in the straight to beat Good Job Bro ($4.80), who was ridden by Queensland's Alannah Fancourt, by a half length.
Queensland apprentice James Orman was third on the favourite Glendarra ($3.80).
Hurdle, 21, originally rode in New Zealand and used a scholarship he won in 2012 to try his luck in Queensland.
After a stint with leading trainer Rob Heathcote, Hurdle went to Victoria and last year switched to South Australia where he has been in great form.
Hurdle has ridden 26 winners in South Australia this season and 13 of those have been in the metropolitan area putting him eighth on the Adelaide riders' premiership.
"Mr Alfranco is a beautiful quiet horse, he was no trouble at all. He was able to put himself in the race and showed a good turn of foot coming around the turn," Hurdle said.
"I spent a lot of time on the Sunshine Coast earlier in my career so was great to come back and ride a winner."
It was Mr Alfranco's third win in his past five starts for Toowoomba trainer Kevin Kemp who says the gelding will eventually make a genuine middle-distance horse at city level.
Grey mare Britaila Kate ($3) also celebrated her return to Queensland with a win in the XXXX Handicap (1400m).
Britaila Kate was prepared by Kelly Doughty on the Gold Coast but had been with Chris Waller in Sydney since January last year before returning to win on Wednesday for her original trainer.
