Supara top pick for $200,000 Nolan Classic

Wednesday 11 March 2015, 5:19pm

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Supara has opened favourite to win the $200,000 Keith F Nolan Classic at Kembla Grange.

Supara, runner-up to top filly First Seal in the Surround Stakes, has drawn gate 12 in a field of 13 for the Group Three race on Friday.

Waterhouse has also paid up for Supara in the Phar Lap Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday where she has drawn much closer to the rails in barrier two.

If she starts at Kembla Grange, Supara will be out to give her owners Newhaven Park a second important win in a race for fillies in the less than a week.

Newhaven's two-year-old English qualified for a Golden Slipper start with her Reisling Stakes win at Randwick and leading jockey Blake Shinn will keep the mount at Rosehill on Saturday week.

Bookmakers have made Supara their $3.60 top pick for Kembla Grange ahead of Slightly Sweet ($3.80), the Jason Coyle-trained filly which ran third in the Surround.

Wine Tales, a promising filly for Chris Waller which is also a Phar Lap acceptor, is on the third line of Nolan betting at $4.20.

The Nolan Classic meeting also features a Provincial Championship qualifying heat with a capacity field trying to earn a place in a $300,000 final at Randwick next month.

South-coast trainer Bede Murray has already qualified Sure And Fast for the final and he will try to add to his representation with Darci Magic, O'Reilly's Revenge and Junoesque.
