Bowman gets acquainted with Red Cadeaux

Jockey Hugh Bowman could be excused for wanting a sleep-in after a hectic weekend.

But the Sydney rider made sure he was at Werribee on Monday morning to get acquainted with his Australian Cup mount Red Cadeaux before the Group One race at Flemington on Saturday.

Bowman landed a treble at Randwick on Saturday and backed it up with a double at Canberra on Sunday before getting a late night flight to Melbourne.

After riding the three-time Melbourne Cup runner-up Red Cadeaux in a canter at Werribee, Bowman headed back to Sydney to prepare for a busy morning of trackwork on Tuesday and six rides at Randwick on Wednesday.

Red Cadeaux, who is on his fifth visit to Australia, was just out to stretch his legs and will have a more strenuous work-out later in the week, but it was important for Bowman to get to know the English gelding before Saturday's 2000m race.

"He looks in good order and felt in good order," Bowman said.

"I only cantered him around. I didn't really get a guide of where he's at but he feels like a quality horse."

Bowman has scrutinised the gelding's record ahead of the Australian Cup and although 2000 metres is obviously short of his premium distance, he expects him to run a good race.

"His record is there for everyone to see and he has performed well over 2000 metres before, but the reality is he's going to be better over further," Bowman said."

Bowman said he was hoping for a bit of moisture in the ground at Flemington on Saturday to get the nine-year-old through to his following two runs in The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill on March 28 and the Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick two weeks later.

"We want him to race well and come out of it well and head to Sydney in one piece," Bowman said.
